What does it look like to do democracy? Find out on October First Friday (10/2) as we unveil and celebrate our new Greenway ArtsWalk exhibit “Doing Democracy”. In partnership with the LU Art Galleries, this new exhibition on the South Bethlehem Greenway is an extension of their latest exhibit Doing Democracy: Photography from the George Stephanopoulos Collection.

The Greenway ArtsWalk will feature 20 photographs that shine a light on significant events of the 20th century to the present—featuring world leaders, the media, politicians, civil rights movements, and everyday Americans. Coinciding with the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, the exhibition and related programs will engage issues of democracy in all its forms, providing a platform for participants from all political perspectives to share their ideas and opinions.

In addition an audio guide will be provided along the 1.7 linear path, community groups will be present to help folks register to vote, and the opportunity to make a customized political poster or button.

The first 100 individuals will be eligible to win free LUAG Swag and there will also be individually packaged drinks and snacks available free of charge.

To help everyone enjoy this event, please closely follow the following safety protocols:
Socially distance from others at least 6 feet apart at all times whenever possible.
Wear a cloth face-covering in any circumstance when interacting with others. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is requiring the use of cloth face coverings when in public.
Wash your hands frequently and whenever in contact with high touch surfaces.
Do not come to this event if you feel unwell and have COVID-like symptoms such as cough and high fever. Also, please stay at home if you have been in contact with someone who is diagnosed with COVID within the past 14 days.

Celebration is from 5pm – 6:45pm. The Greenway is open all evening!

About the Exhibition:
Doing Democracy: Photography from the George Stephanopoulos Collection
What does it look like to do democracy? This exhibition explores the unfolding process of American democracy through an array of photographs that shine a light on significant events of the 20th century and the present—featuring world leaders, the media, politicians, civil rights movements, and everyday Americans. Coinciding with the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, the exhibition and related programs will engage issues of democracy in all its forms, providing a platform for participants from all political perspectives to share their ideas and opinions.
Better known as ABC News chief anchor and former Clinton White House advisor, George Stephanopoulos is also an avid collector of photography. Since 2004, his significant gifts to the LUAG collection include works by key 20th-21st century photographers including Arthur Rothstein, Ilse Bing, Erika Stone, Dmitri Baltermants, Danny Lyon, Leonard Freed, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others.
This exhibition has been co-curated with students and faculty from the Departments of History, Political Science, Communication, Journalism, and Art, Architecture & Design.
