The Greenway ArtsWalk: Doing Democracy

The Greenway ArtsWalk is located on the South Bethlehem Greenway – a 1.7 linear mile path located between Third and Fourth Streets downtown. The best place to “begin” your Greenway travel is to enter across the street from 306 S. New Street to the Bethlehem Skatepark.

Along this path are double sided large easels that showcase a new art exhibition each year called the Greenway ArtsWalk. There are 10 easels that span the length of the Greenway – making it possible to view 20 different panels. The current exhibition “Thinking Through Drawing: Works on Paper, Drawings, and Sketchbooks from the Collection and Community” is presented by our sponsor Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG).

This exhibition explores the many forms and functions of drawing, exploring examples from the museum collection and submissions from artists in the community through reproductions that pair works together. 20 community artists were selected from over 205 submissions. The exhibition includes works by Natalie Alper, Keith Haring, Jose Clemente Orozco, Cao Yingyi, Maurice Prendergast, George Segal, Anita Weschler, and many others from the LUAG Collection. A list of the community artists can be found on www.luag.org.

To view the entire exhibition and more proceed to the Lehigh University Art Galleries at 420 E. Packer Avenue!

Current Exhibition:

In partnership with Lehigh University Art Galleries, the SouthSide Arts District is proud to showcase an extension of their current exhibit Doing Democracy: Photography from the George Stephanopoulos Collection on the Greenway ArtsWalk. The exhibition features an audio guide (bring your smartphone and earbuds) with 20 powerful images of American democracy unfolding through significant events of the 20th century to the present. These enlarged images and complimentary audio guides can be viewed along the Greenway path to the Skatepark located across the street from Wind Creek Casino & Resort. We encourage residents of Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley to visit the Lehigh University Art Galleries to explore the full exhibit, as well as walk the Greenway, and participate in community programs, empower your Civic duty, start healthy The conversations and encourage positive activism.

Doing Democracy: Photography from the George Stephanopoulos Collection will be on display on the Greenway ArtsWalk September 1, 2020 – May 21, 2021. To learn more visit www.luag.org
